Portal Magazine is Vancouver Island University’s literary magazine that features art, design, photography and writing by students. Published yearly, Portal provides students the opportunity to have their work published and viewed by thousands of readers across the country.
Every year, the third year Graphic Design students are tasked with designing the magazine cover. We were asked to design three covers that convey the feeling of the magazine but which are all different from each other.
I chose to create a cover using only photography, one using only illustration and the third that combines both mediums into one cohesive piece.
The first cover is a high dynamic range photograph taken at Morrell Sanctuary in Nanaimo, BC. Walking through the sanctuary, I happened across an impossibly small, cute door fastened to the trunk of a tree, complete with a window and small landing. As I looked at it I couldn’t help but see it as an entrance, a doorway or portal into a fantastical new world, much like the works in Portal Magazine.
The second cover is a combination of photography and digital art. Drawing inspiration from traditional and digital artists across the web, I developed the concept of a person painting a new world over the old and adding in vibrancy, colour and life into an otherwise dull and dark landscape.
The last cover is strictly illustration, made with watercolor and brought into Photoshop for editing. This concept revolved around the idea of falling into a new world in sleep, dreams or the mind and inspired by the character poster for Ariadne, played by Ellen Page in the movie Inception.
Although each design is slightly different, I aimed for the concepts to be closely connected and reflect the vision of the magazine while still drawing in future readers’ interest.
